Continuous Improvement
We will continuously assess our processes in order to reduce the risks to our employees and those affected by our operations and we'll have systems in place to measure our improvement.

Accountability
We will ensure that all operating companies have policies and practices in place to live up to this commitment. Compliance with this commitment and with all local relevant law is mandatory for all employees and for contractors operating on our behalf. Management in each operating company is responsible for the education and training required, so that all employees and contractors are able to understand and comply with this commitment.

Smurfit Kappa Group Safety & Environmental Principles

  • Every facility within the Smurfit Kappa Group’s worldwide operations must have Safety & Environmental Policies. The Safety & Environmental Policies will be specific to each facility and will be prepared by the Facility Manager. The policies will be communicated to each employee at the facility. Additionally, every facility must have a Safety Plan and this will be reviewed annually in full consultation with all employees.
  • A supportive Safety Organisation will be established at each facility and there must be a Safety Committee and Safety Coordinator at each location. Safety Committees will be formally established at management levels to facilitate effective review of safety. There will also be an appointed person for environmental issues.
  • Internal Safety & Environmental Audits and outside expert inspections will take place on a regular basis. All recommendations will be followed strictly and unsafe practices will be eliminated.
  • All accidents and work related illnesses are preventable and we are all, individually and collectively, directly responsible for preventing them.
  • We all want to be proud of our working environment and must make it a place for us to be safe. This necessitates the commitment to high standards of house keeping and hygiene.
  • As safety & environment is all about good management all managers are responsible and accountable for safety. Safety & environmental performance will be a key component of management performance reviews.
  • Safety is a condition of employment. Every employee has a key role to play in creating a safe working environment and is the key for the success of a Safety and Health programme. Employees will be given safety training whenever necessary and will have to follow safe procedures at all times. The breaking of safe working practice guidelines and rules is not acceptable conduct.
  • We can all learn from accidents and from each other's experiences. All unsafe practices and incidences for potential injury need to be investigated. Any accident with serious injuries will be fully investigated, reported and circulated throughout the group via the human resources network so that preventative action can be taken everywhere to prevent future occurrences.
  • Exchange of safety & environmental best practices between operations is essential. All facilities must be prepared to share their safety & environmental experience and learn best practice from others.
  • Safety & Environmental awards will be presented annually. Excellence and achievement in safety & environmental should be celebrated.
